Many varieties of Indian Peace Medals were produced in the 19th Century and were presented to Native Americans as tokens of peace and friendship. Despite their size, they were often holed and worn around the neck. This bronze example, nearly 3" in diameter, weighs half a pound. The obverse features a portrait of Lincoln, and the reverse two Indians surrounding a central motif with a third plowing a field. Incredibly the background features 4 children unmistakenly playing a game of baseball. Visible is a batter, underhand pitcher, fielder and observer standing near home plate. One of the earliest known figural baseball artifacts rendered in high relief and truly a work of art. This rare medal exhibits light general wear overall near fine condition. Only the second one I have ever handled.
